چکیده

This manuscript describes a review and analysis of the correction factor for come-up time (CUT), introduced by Dr. C. Olin Ball in his famous Formula Method for thermal process calculations. This correction factor has commonly been considered applicable only to the Ball Formula method. In the alternative General Method, the effect of CUT is automatically included in the calculated lethality value as long as numerical integration is carried out over the entire cold spot temperature-time profile from the point when steam is turned on. The hypothesis of this communication is that Ball’s formula method, just like the General Method, also includes the effect of CUT in its calculations, regardless of where the zero time line is placed within the come-up time. Several computer simulation studies were carried out with the zero time shifted to different locations within the come-up time, resulting in the calculated heating lethality determined by Ball’s method being almost the same as that generated by the General Method. This work confirmed that it is not necessary to shift the zero time in Ball’s formula method because the calculations will always reflect the effect of CUT regardless of where the zero time is chosen.

Deriving New Sinc Results from Old

From previously established results in [2] we develop a simple proof of Keith Ball’s expression in [1] for the volume of the intersection of an (n− 1)dimensional hyperplane with an n-dimensional cube, as well as a simple proof of the formula given by Frank and Riede in [5] for that volume. In our study in [2] of sinc integrals over a decade ago we established results—some of which were recapitu...

Extracting 3D information from broadcast soccer video

In this paper, we propose a new method to estimate players’ and ball’s positions from monocular broadcast soccer video. With the relationship between objects and the camera in perspective projection, we derive the formula for estimating the moving objects’ positions in real world, even when the ball is in the air. This method calibrates the camera’s position in the stadium through the homograph...

Some Applications of Ball’s Extension Theorem

We present two applications Ball’s extension theorem. First we observe that Ball’s extension theorem, together with the recent solution of Ball’s Markov type 2 problem due to Naor, Peres, Schramm and Sheffilield, imply a generalization, and an alternative proof of, the Johnson-Lindenstrauss extension theorem. Secondly, we prove that the distortion required to embed the integer lattice {0, 1, . ...

Ball’s Motion Estimation Using a Line-Scan Camera

An original method is proposed for estimating the position and velocity of a moving ball using a single line-scan camera. The method consists of two steps: firstly, the ball’s initial position and velocity are determined by several key points in the image, and secondly, these parameters are further refined by a model-based optimization algorithm. The algorithm achieves accurate parameter estima...

A Method to Estimate Ball's State of Spin by Image Processing for Improving Strategies in the RoboCup Small-Size-Robot League

This paper addresses an estimation problem of the ball’s state of spin in RoboCup Small Size League (SSL). A spinning ball varies its speed after the ball bounces off the floor. This paper proposes an image-based estimation method of the ball’s state of spin, in particular, by using inertia feature of co-occurrence matrix of the image sequence. The effectiveness of our proposed method is shown ...
